Nana Kwabena Akwah and Mr. Obengs Story

Nana Kwabena Akwa II is the chief of Kwabena Akwa, a community within the SMILE Ghana project. Mr. Obeng Asare is the principal of Kwabena Akwah Primary School. The school was founded in 1987 and two years later the school collapsed and was rebuilt in 2003. As education is a great legacy that cannot be taken away from one, Nana Kwabena Akwa II and Mr. Obeng Asare were determined against all odds to ensure that every school-age child was enrolled but to no avail before the SMILE Ghana project arrived.

According to Nana Kwabena and Mr. Obeng Asare, the intervention of the SMILE-Ghana project in the region has achieved tremendous results, which have enabled every school to go to school happily, according to the headteacher. The frequent meetings and state-of-the-art classrooms built by the project in the community allow all parents to understand and appreciate the importance of education. With the promulgation of the community charter, community members now adhere to the community works and initiatives that will ensure community development after Nana Kwabena Akwa II. According to the principal, the community was able to initiate a feeding program for the student before the government intervened. Because the project had a tremendous impact on the lives of the children and the entire community, they took every opportunity to speak out on child labor issues across the country.
